Energy Taxation

 

A proposal for a Directive amending Directive 2003/96 restructuring the Community framework for the taxation of energy products and electricity has been expected for some time now. A previously envisaged date for entry into force of the revised directive is 1st January 2013.


The overall aim of the revision is to adjust the current taxation system to the recently adopted climate and energy package. Major novelty should be the combination of a general energy consumption taxation and a CO2 tax, which is favourable to renewable energy sources.

  • A presentation given by DG TAXUD during an informal meeting with stakeholders in mid July. DG TAXUD invited the stakeholders to comment to the draft proposal by 10 September 2009. The next informal stakeholder meeting will take place on 28 September.
