International Conference "Renewable Energy Sources for Islands, Tourism and Water Desalination"


EREC has organised from the 26-28 May 2003 the conference "Renewable Energy Sources for Islands, Tourism and Water Desalination" in Crete, Greece on 26 - 28 May 2003, focusing on the three following topics:

  • RES for islands: Ways to promote renewables on islands and to raise awareness on the possibilities renewable energy sources offer to the economic development of islands
  • RES and tourism :The importance of an "unspoilt environment" in the choice of a tourism destination and the role of RES in the sector
  • Desalination with RES :A valid and economically interesting option to the energy-intensive process of desalination

This International conference “RES for Islands, Tourism and Desalination” has been an excellent opportunity to create and intensify contacts among experts in the fields of renewable energy integration in islands, for tourism and/or for desalination. The conference welcomed more than 175 participants from 31 countries coming from the 5 continents. The 3-day conference hosted 56 speakers and 36 poster presentations on Renewable Energy for Islands, Tourism and Desalination.
